Job description

Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Responsibilities

The Atmospheric, Climate, and Earth Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral scientist to perform research to improve understanding of cloud physics with a focus on climate. Working with PNNL scientists, the successful candidate will help with the development of Machine Learning components of cloud physics schemes across scales, with a focus on climate and Earth System Modeling.

The successful candidate will be expected to publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and communicate research results at conferences and workshops.  Additionally, the position will provide opportunities to interact with scientists at PNNL, and other national laboratories and universities collaborating on topics in cloud physics and Earth System Modeling.  Teamwork and strong communication skills for engaging with project teams are also essential.

Candidates are encouraged to provide a cover letter as part of their application under “additional documents” indicating your relevant experience and interest in the research areas of cloud physics, earth system modeling and machine learning.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the following areas: cloud microphysics and its parameterization in models, atmospheric turbulence, numerical methods in climate science, machine learning, and/or data science.
  • Experience with data analysis in commonly used programming languages (e.g., Python).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including technical writing.
  • Demonstrated record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Experience modifying, compiling, and testing/validating geophysical model codes.
  • Proficiency in FORTRAN and/or C++, or strong experience with another compiled programming language.
  • Experience with machine learning methods (such as neural networks) applied to scientific problems.
  • Experience working in UNIX/LINUX and high-performance computing environments.
  • Ability to think critically and develop and test hypotheses about physical mechanisms underlying model behaviors.
Additional Information

Preferred Education/Credential:

PhD in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field.
