Job description

The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) at The University of Oklahoma (OU) is currently looking for a Research Scientist to work with the NOAA/NWS Storm Prediction Center (SPC). This position will be located at the SPC in Norman, OK, housed within the National Weather Center (NWC), a highly collaborative operational, research, and academic environment containing several NOAA and OU organizations. Here you will work directly with development meteorologists and operational forecasters at the SPC and will have opportunities to interact with NOAA and academic scientists within the NWS, NOAA, and the broader meteorological community.

As a CIWRO Verification Specialist working with the SPC, you will:

  1. Develop and maintain a robust verification program to support SPC research and operational requirements from observations to seasonal time scales, including verification of meteorological forecasts and promising information extraction methods;
  2. Assist in transitioning verification techniques developed by CIWRO researchers to operations;
  3. Engage with NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT) leads on verification requirements and dataflows to ensure success in HWT experiments;
  4. Represent CIWRO/SPC by contributing to formal and informal scientific publications and attending off-site conferences, workshops, symposia, and hazardous-weather-related outreach events; and
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

The minimum qualifications for this position are:

  1. A Doctoral Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or a related area; and
  2. United States citizenship or permanent rsidency.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  1. Experience working with the National Weather Service; and
  2. Experience working with a Software Development Life Cycle.

When applying, please include your experience with high-performance computing, version control, web development, Linux (UNIX) environments, including AWIPS/N-AWIPS systems, and meteorological verification software packages, such as MET/METplus. Lastly, strong communication skills are crucial to being successful in this position.

Regular working hours will be observed except for occasional irregular hours during data collection, warning/forecast experiments, or workshops conducted at remote locations. Additionally, occasional travel is expected. CIWRO staff will provide general supervision, with technical oversight provided by SPC management. You will work under general supervision but are expected to work independently and determine actions to take in handling all but unusual situations. This is a non-supervisory position, although you may serve as a leader of technical teams. The beginning salary will be competitive for this position and location and will be dependent on experience. The University of Oklahoma provides a generous benefits package. Information on benefits may be found at https://hr.ou.edu/. The position will be in Norman, OK (https://www.normanok.gov/about-norman) at the National Weather Center (https://www.ou.edu/nwc). The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is identified.
