Job description
About the position:
This research focuses on improving the understanding of physical processes and interactions taking place at the atmosphere-waves-ocean interface and their representation in coupled modeling systems. Research areas include: development of ML methods to enhance and speed up source terms in wave models; wave induced mixing in the upper ocean; mass transfer at the ocean-atmosphere interface; impacts of waves and ocean spray on the dynamics of the MPBL. The funded research will use NASA data and products, and a diversity of relevant data in the community domain. Primarily tool for assessing results will be the GEOS modeling system developed by the NASA/Goddard/Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO).
Qualifications
+ Strong background in wave modeling (i.e. WaveWatch, SWAN, WAM, …)
+ Expertise in atmosphere-waves-ocean coupling: representation of physical processes in models and/or theoretical research in this field.
+ Prior research work in one or more of the following fields: marine PBL, wave induced mixing, wave dynamics.
+ Prior examples of model development.
+ Familiarity with ML methods and their applications in Earth Science.
+ Development of proposals
To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to anegri@umd.edu.
