Support Scientist-Aerosol Modeling NOA1777

College Park, MD

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) is seeking candidates to support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) on further development, application, and evaluation of a global aerosol prediction model.  The particular focus of the position will be to transition, test and evaluate a global aerosol model within the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) and couple aerosol processes with NGGPS atmospheric dynamics and physics.  The candidate will also extend verification software to evaluate the global aerosol model predictions.


  • Incorporate the GOCART aerosol module into the coupled unified modeling framework.
  • Include aerosol data into the operational data streams.
  • Evaluate the performance of the aerosol modeling system using the NCEP verification system.
  • Begin to develop aerosol-radiation interactions in the unified model.

Required Skills:
Education and Experience

  • Ph.D or M.S. in Atmospheric Sciences or Atmospheric Chemistry with at least two years post degree experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in aerosol or atmospheric chemistry modeling.
  • Experience working with large data sets from model output on large computer systems and workstations in a FORTRAN/C++/UNIX environment.
  • Experiencing writing and testing programs and scripts using FORTRAN 90 and Python.
  • Experience working with atmospheric chemistry modeling codes, using model verification packages like MET+, developing diagnostic methods, familiarity with visualizations packages, and an understanding of GRIB2 file formats are also desired.
  • Ability to obtain all necessary security clearances for access to NCEP operational computer systems (permanent resident status or US citizen is required).
