Job description

Weather Analytics is seeking an enormously talented, tech-savvy meteorologist with a passion for understanding and explaining the Earth’s atmosphere – one who also can manipulate data and develop algorithms to  advance the science of meteorology while contributing significantly to our clients’ success.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Play a critical role on the science team in leading the selection, development, enhancement and integration of weather, climate and other data into solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations
  • Maintain and enhance automated, real-time model and product software systems
  • Develop new algorithms that build on current capabilities and add to Weather Analytics’ intellectual assets
  • Access and manipulate global, regional and unstructured data sets including those produced by NOAA, ECMWF, USGS, USDA and by U.S. Government agencies that are clients of Weather Analytics and by certain of our private-sector customers
  • Develop algorithms for long- and short-term weather forecasts or historical weather data using sophisticated numerical and statistical models, whether available on an open-source basis or invented by Weather Analytics
  • Collaborate with other Weather Analytics team members including data scientists, systems engineers, product developers and business developers
  • Support and provide thought leadership in the development and documentation of patent applications and in their successful prosecution

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in meteorology or atmospheric sciences
  • Experience in harnessing the capabilities of peers and other team members, whether in meteorological or other disciplines, to accomplish strategic and key financial goals
  • Experience compiling, running, debugging, and post-processing the community Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in a supercomputing/cluster computing environment
  • Extensive experience managing and manipulating meteorological or other geospatial datasets including GRIB, netCDF, Binary, HDF5, and GIS
  • Programming experience in the following, or related languages: Python (preferred), UNIX shell scripting, FORTRAN, MATLAB, IDL, R, Java, and C/C++
  • Pent-up or meaningfully leveraged intellectual curiosity about how meteorology can help accomplish the missions of defined user groups
  • Strong desire to provide scientific expertise in ways that notably accelerate business results
  • Eagerness to contribute in an agile, nimble workplace that finds smart ways to achieve and maintain scientific integrity in a demanding, fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability, within reason, to juggle and execute successfully multiple sets of demanding priorities that can meaningfully contribute to organizational success
  • Experience in organizing, planning and leading meetings of diverse groups, with and without direct reporting relationships to you or to each other, to help define and accomplish challenging objectives
