We are seeking a Senior Atmospheric Scientist to join our team. We have a longstanding base of projects that utilize Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP), coupled applications such as transport and dispersion, cloud and local HPC computing, and specialized sensor development. We are seeking a creative and energetic individual who can contribute directly to these S&T areas, provide guidance to a team of software engineers, and become the front facing scientist to our clients. The ideal candidate not only helps to maintain our current client base but brings new ideas and possibilities of expanding into new areas of related interest. We have also developed a prototype specialized indoor meteorological sensor, so lab experience in working with sensor and electronics technology, or guiding others in this realm, is a plus.

Our team is committed to providing on-demand meteorological forecasts at regional and urban scales anywhere on the globe, with emphasis on adverse weather conditions such as extreme heat, storms, and flooding. Our mission includes guiding emergency preparedness and response in support of National Security, and thus STAR plays an important role at the policy level for various government agencies.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads scientific team to develop, test, and implement weather, climate, coupled applications, and atmospheric sensing systems
  • Supports software team to ensure software code effectively performs scientific routines
  • Provides customer support, user training, and presentations of technical material to audiences with diverse backgrounds
  • Contributes to the creation of proposals and program development efforts
  • Performs literature reviews to support scientific decisions and system designs, model configurations, etc.
  • Maintains current knowledge of emerging NWP and Data Assimilation (DA) science and technology as well as coupled applications in transport and dispersion, flooding, etc.
  • Develop and maintain professional network

Required Qualifications:

  • An MS or PhD (strongly preferred) in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics or Mathematics, or similar
  • Experience running, or at least working with NWP models, especially WRF
  • Working knowledge of DA in NWP models
  • 3+ years of professional, progressive scientific experience
  • Demonstrated record of excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrates dependability and initiative, and possesses the ability to solve problems as part of a team and as an individual performer
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills and a willingness to think creatively in exploring new opportunities for company engagement
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and either possess an active SECRET clearance (strongly preferred) or be willing to apply for one

Desired qualifications (for highly qualified candidates):

  • Experience in operational NWP model setup and tuning
  • Experience with DA of radar and lidar into NWP models
  • Working knowledge of environmental modeling, e.g., water resource systems models
  • Experience in atmospheric transport and dispersion (T&D) modeling such as HPAC, QUIC, and HYSPLIT
  • Experience with specialized atmospheric sensor design and related laboratory work
  • Experience with LINUX and FORTRAN
  • Experience with Python or Golang and one or more scripting languages (Python, bash, C-shell, etc.)
  • Teaching experience (e.g., at the level of a graduate teaching assistant)

About STAR:
STAR is located in Boulder, CO next to a scenic bike and dog park. We are funded through a stable and long-standing contract base that also provides for internal research and development where we are free to chart our own course and explore new areas of interest.

This flexibility invites creative thinking among its staff, who enjoy providing new capabilities to our sponsors while enhancing the breadth and depth of their own professional development.

STAR originated as a spinoff from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in 2005 and our close affiliation and collaborations with NCAR over the years has resulted in delivering cutting-edge atmospheric modeling systems used by the U.S. government, foreign governments, and private industry.

STAR’s services and software products are used in trusted operational systems to protect high-profile buildings, personnel, cities, and missions from attacks involving airborne releases of toxic agents. Our flagship product, STAR-NWP™, automates the WRF/WPS cycling process and includes a workflow management software that simplifies system inputs/configurations and automates work sequences and file management procedures to standardize the complex process of numerical weather prediction.
