Job description
Duties:
ESSIC and the Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) of the University of Maryland, College Park, are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to the development and validation of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) data processing techniques. As a Research Scientist, you will be responsible for processing GNSS RO data, specifically from excess phase to bending angle and refractivity, to derive accurate atmospheric profiles.
Responsibilities:
1. GNSS Radio Occultation Data Processing: Conduct data processing and analysis of GNSS radio occultation signals to obtain precise measurements of excess phase, bending angle, and refractivity. Familiarity with GNSS RO data formats and software tools will be essential in this role.
2. Algorithm Development: Collaborate with the team to develop and refine algorithms for processing and extracting valuable information from GNSS radio occultation data. The key focus will be the continuous improvement of processing techniques to enhance data accuracy and processing efficiency.
3. Data Validation and Quality Control: Verify the accuracy and reliability of processed GNSS radio occultation data through rigorous validation procedures. Implement quality control measures in the data processing, ensure the consistency and integrity of results, and meet the data product release guidelines and criteria to enable the release of the data to users and the public.
4. Research and Innovation: Stay updated with the latest GNSS radio occultation processing developments and related atmospheric science research. Apply innovative methodologies to enhance the performance and capabilities of our processing techniques.
5. Collaborative Projects: Work closely with other researchers in our team and other teams to support collaborative projects, contributing your expertise in GNSS radio occultation processing and its applications in atmospheric science.
6. Technical Reporting and Publication: Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations to effectively communicate research findings and project progress to internal and external communities. Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
1. Education: A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Remote Sensing, or a related field with a strong focus on GNSS radio occultation data processing.
2. Experience: Minimum of 5 years related work experience with proven experience in processing GNSS radio occultation data, specifically from excess phase to bending angle and refractivity. Familiarity with GNSS data analysis software and programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C/C++, IDL, MATLAB, Python, or similar) is required.
3. Research Background: Demonstrated expertise in atmospheric science research and a solid understanding of relevant concepts related to radio occultation and atmospheric profiling.
4. Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to critically assess data and develop innovative solutions to challenges in GNSS radio occultation processing.
5. Team Player: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
6. Publications: A track record of publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences related to GNSS radio occultation processing and atmospheric science will be an advantage.
7. Citizenship: US citizenship or Permanent Resident (Green Card holder) is required
Join us in our mission to advance atmospheric science through cutting-edge GNSS radio occultation research and contribute to developing novel solutions for climate and weather-related challenges.
To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to xshao@umd.edu..
