Research Engineer/Scientist

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety

IBHS is seeking a talented Researcher to join its research team. Research projects focus on examining the performance and methods to strengthen the built environment when subjected to natural hazards including wind, wind-driven rain, hail and wildfire. These research topics cover a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines including, but not limited to, Atmospheric Science, Wind Engineering or Bluff Body Aerodynamics, Material Science, Building Science, Risk Modeling and Fire Research.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in conceptualizing, planning, construction and instrumentation of laboratory and field research projects. Duties also include data quality control as well as assurance, analysis, writing of technical reports, peer review journal articles and presentation of research results to a wide range of audiences 

Education: MS or PhD (preferred) in atmospheric science, engineering disciplines or a related field. 

Desired Qualifications/Skills (any of the following are desired but not limited to)

  • Ability to analyze large and complex datasets
  • Experience with instrumentation and measurement systems
  • Experience in wind tunnel testing
  • Experience in post-event damage surveys
  • Demonstrated understanding of bluff-body aerodynamics
  • Demonstrated understanding of boundary layer wind flow characteristics
  • Understanding of the societal impacts of weather and climate
  • Experience in risk or catastrophe modeling of natural hazards
  • Construction experience 

About IBHS

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety is a non-profit research and communications organization dedicated to mitigating the effects of natural hazards on the built environment through scientific research, education, outreach, and advocacy. The IBHS Research Center is located in Richburg, South Carolina and conducts laboratory testing related to the performance of building components and systems when subjected to high winds, wind-driven rainfall, hail, and wildfires. In addition, research work also focuses on understanding how the characteristics of natural hazards interact with the built environment and development of mitigation strategies. IBHS currently operates field research programs focusing on understanding the characteristics of hail and hail-producing thunderstorms as well as post-event damage investigations.
