Job description

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (http://eas.unl.edu) is seeking a postdoctoral research associate in atmospheric science to lead an examination of the impact of unoccupied aircraft systems (UAS) on numerical weather prediction (NWP).  The selected candidate will conduct observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) designed to assess the sensitivity of short-range (1-6 hr) convection-allowing NWP model performance to simulated UAS-based data.  This is a 2-year appointment offering a competitive salary along with benefits, supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The successful candidate is expected to take a leadership role in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, dissemination of project results at conferences, and will be encouraged to collaborate on additional projects with the principal investigator and his research group.  Opportunities for participation in field work both directly and tangentially related to this project will be available. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to seek out additional funding opportunities to support research beyond the life of the current awards.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences or a related field, have extensive and demonstrable experience in numerical modeling, and have demonstrable experience with data assimilation techniques.  Experience working with UAS data is preferred as is experience effectively conducting team research.

Review of applications will begin December 9, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. The start date for this position is January 1, 2023.

To apply, go to https://employment.unl.edu/postings/82674 and complete the faculty/administrative form. Applicants must attach 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae, and 3) provide names and contact information for at least three references.
