Job description

Empa - the place where innovation starts

Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
The Laboratory for Air Pollution / Environmental Technology has an opening for a
Postdoc position on Regional inverse modelling of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions and data management
The European Commission has funded three HORIZON projects aiming at the estimation of national greenhouse gas emissions through the use of atmospheric observations and inverse modelling. The project PARIS (https://horizoneurope-paris.eu/), which brings together a high-level consortium of 17 European partner organizations under the lead of the University of Utrecht, focuses on the interface between bottom-up and top-down approaches and aims to strengthen the collaboration between atmospheric scientists and national inventory teams for the evaluation and development of national inventories. As a key partner of PARIS contributing to the development of national scale solutions, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc experienced in atmospheric transport and inverse modelling.

Your tasks
  • Develop and apply methods for European scale emission estimation using inverse modelling approaches for non-CO2 greenhouse gases (methane, nitrous oxides and fluorinated compounds).
  • Extend inverse modelling tools for the use with co-emitted tracers like ethane and GHG isotopologues.
  • Improve interchangeability of inverse modelling tools between project partners and engage with national inventory teams.
  • Strengthen traceability and reproduceability of model results by the development of a plugin for the workflow manager AiIDA.
  • Participate in regular project meetings, manage Empa's tasks and deliverables in the PARIS project.
Required qualifications
  • PhD degree in physics, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering or a related discipline.
  • A strong background in atmospheric numerical modelling (preferably including Lagrangian particle dispersion models).
  • Excellent programming skills, in e.g., Python, R, and Linux shell scripting.
  • Ability to communicate scientific results in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
  • Fluency in English is required; basic knowledge of German is desirable.
The postdoc will benefit from an inspiring international environment and closely collaborate with our project partners. We offer a highly stimulating research environment with excellent infrastructure and a broad interdisciplinary surrounding. Working place will be Empa in Dübendorf.

Appointments can start as soon as possible, preferably before June 2023. All applications received before 1 April 2023 will receive full consideration.
