Job description

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation and New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater, and marine science. Our core purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide an understanding of climate and the atmosphere, and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve the safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders.

The National Centre for Climate, Atmosphere and Hazards team undertakes research and consultancy services that provides impartial scientific advice to wide range of sectors in New Zealand and the Pacific on the region's weather, climate and its impacts.

What we're looking for:

We are looking for a Meteorologist/Forecaster to join our busy team and strengthen our capability to meet the increase in demand from the public and industry for our short, medium, and long-term weather, climate and environmental forecasting services.

The purpose of this position is to contribute to NIWA's meteorological and environmental forecasting services by preparing, delivering, and communicating forecasts, and by developing insightful visualisations of meteorological and climatological data for internal and external dissemination. The position also contributes to the development and/or implementation of forecast products and tools from NIWA's models and the National Climate Database and to the improvement of forecast products by post-processing model data.

Candidates with experience in computer programming languages like Python or R would have a strong advantage, particularly those who understand how to use such languages to quickly parse and analyse meteorological or climatological datasets.

What you will bring:

You will have exceptional communication skills, advanced knowledge of the latest meteorology, climate, and environmental science forecasting techniques, along with the ability to accurately analyse data and models to create both weather forecasts and climate outlooks, and preferably, multi-channel media delivery experience. You will have a bachelor's (or higher) degree in meteorology/atmospheric science, or in mathematics, physics, and/or equivalent experience in a relevant aspect of engineering or environmental science, along with a qualification and/or training in weather forecasting. A comprehensive knowledge of New Zealand meteorology and climate (including atmosphere, hydrosphere, and marine environments) and climate outlook science would be an advantage.

A bit about the position:

The preferred location for this position is Auckland, New Zealand's largest city. NIWA's Auckland office is situated near the vibrant city waterfront, with easy access to public transport options as well as free parking for staff. Along with remuneration in the range $85,000 to $115,000, depending on skills and experience, we offer a wide range of benefits.

We don't expect perfection in our candidates - if you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every point referenced in the position description, please still get in touch!

The position involves working a 37.5 hour week. NIWA offers flexible working options (e.g., flexible start and finish times). We are happy to discuss potential flexible options for this position at the interview stage.

NIWA promotes the importance and value of an inclusive and diverse workforce, including the Rainbow Community, and pride ourselves on being a family-friendly and supportive workplace.
