Earth Scientist in virtual reality development.

Duties:
The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) is a NOAA cooperative institute hosted at the University of Maryland's Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC). An ongoing collaboration has been established with the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) to advance the use of *virtual reality* for interactive visualization of NOAA meteorological datasets. CISESS is seeking an individual to *provide meteorological guidance to the VR software development team*.
A working knowledge of some or all of the following NOAA instruments and data products is desired.
- GOES-ABI
- L1b radiance
- cloud-top height estimate
- derived motion winds
- GOES-GLM, gridded product suite
- Advected Layer Precipitable Water (ALPW)
- Global Data Assimilation System (GDAS)
- Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS)
- rainfall estimates/accumulation
- snowfall estimates/accumulation
- Soil Moisture Operational Products System (SMOPS)
- NOAA Unique Combined Atmospheric Processing System (NUCAPS)
- Microwave Integrated Retrieval System (MIRS)
- NOAA P-3 Tail X-Band Doppler Radar
Responsibilities include regular meetings with immersive media engineers to provide guidance on effective design for data visualization and user interface.
Qualifications:
Must be able to analyze the variety of datasets to provide examples and identify formatting or quality issues. Responsible for project management and seeking future research funding. Interest or experience in computer science and data visualization will lend well to project synergy. Knowledge of experts who can offer part-time consultation will be considered.
