COMPASS seeks motivated candidates for the full-time position of Science Communication Associate to play an integral role in our Trainings Program. Our materials are grounded in the latest research on communication and engagement, and focus on a range of topics including: the science of science communication and risk communication, crafting messages, storytelling, and leadership. Essential Duties, Responsibilities, and Skills
The Science Communication Associate will:

  • Organize and deliver customized workshops and trainings within the Trainings Program, building supportive learning environments and creating meaningful experiences for all participants
  • Partner effectively and ethically with external experts and contractors, including cultivating relationships to expand COMPASS’ network of experts to include greater diversity in topical focus, background, expertise, experience, and more
  • Collaborate with other team members to update and create new content, modules, and examples
  • Learn from and adapt based on feedback, experience, and past delivery
  • Provide technical and administrative support for training events
  • Provide tailored support to individuals and/or groups of scientists as timely opportunities to engage with journalists and/or policy audiences arise 
  • Keep up to date on the latest science of science communication research with respect to COMPASS’ core materials and areas of potential new innovation

Education and/or Experience

A minimum of two years of relevant work experience OR a graduate degree and at least 1 year of relevant work experience. Ability to develop and deliver material in Spanish is encouraged. Relevant experience includes any of the following:

  • Experience in the research and/or practice of science communication, ecology, economics, environmental science, sustainability science, or natural resource management
  • Experience in journalism, media, or science writing
  • Experience with risk communication
  • Experience in local, state, federal, or international policy making
  • Experience partnering with under-resourced communities
  • Experience working with social scientists or conducting social science
  • Experience with non-profit or academic organizational leadership development, strategic thinking, business development, or networking
