DESCRIPTION Develop spatialized return interval estimates by pairing precipitation with satellite derived flood data

BACKGROUND & RATIONALE Cloud to Street is a remote sensing platform that dynamically monitors floods around the world and analyzes local flood risk in a web dashboard at a fraction of the cost and time of traditional modeling. Our mission is to ensure that all vulnerable communities have the data they need to prepare and respond by reducing the scientific barrier to disaster information. Our systems will power flood insurance for 10 million new customers and provide actionable risk data for the 100 most vulnerable watersheds around the world within 5 years.

In partnership with Google Earth Outreach, the Dartmouth Flood Observatory and others over the last 3 years, we developed the core algorithms behind our technology and developed socio-physical flood risk assessments and local dashboard tools in India, Argentina, Senegal, the Nile Basin, and New York, funded primarily by the World Bank. In 2018, we are releasing the world’s largest database of flood maps - The Global Flood Database. Currently, we are supporting monsoon preparations for the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh with our flood probability maps and eventually flood monitoring.

We are looking for a best-in-class climatologist to lead scientific development of methods for analyzing extreme events with precipitation data to better understand risk. The focus of the short term project will be combining precipitation with our large library of remotely sensed flood extent data to understand historic trends and flood risk. In addition to algorithm and/or statistical development, this person will provide technical support to project stakeholders, help develop project proposals, and work closely with the remote sensing analyst and chief scientist.


  • Develop return times and statistical distributions of extreme events for precipitation from satellite data
  • Combine precipitation analysis with satellite based flood extent and depth
  • Develop and share reproducible code in Python via GitHub
  • Technical support for clients and assist with final written reports, training materials
  • Explore storm prediction tools for local stakeholders


  • Masters or PhD (Ph D preferred) in geosciences or related field with focus on precipitation and geospatial analysis
  • Experience with data science related fields such as computer science, applied mathematics, information technology, physics or software engineering
  • Experience coding in Python with raster data (e.g. Geotiffs)
  • Proven track record developing precipitation methods for analyzing extreme events
  • A commitment to justice, diversity, science and solidarity with vulnerable communities 
  • Ability to work on a remote team with a fast-paced startup mentality
  • Preferred: Experience with Google Earth Engine Javascript and Python APIs
  • Preferred: Experience using the Google Cloud Ecosystem
