Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Research Scientist within the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) of NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratories (ESRL) in Boulder, Colorado! The researcher will work alongside federal and university employees to characterize the relationship of large-scale atmospheric dynamics and teleconnections to surface climate and chemical transport. The researcher will analyze stratospheric dynamics, chemistry, and transport in different climate change and intervention model simulations. The researcher will be involved in developing model diagnostics to evaluate the role of stratosphere-troposphere coupling in NOAA’s Unified Forecast System.
 
We seek an individual with proven expertise in large-scale atmospheric dynamics on sub-seasonal to decadal timescales. It is also desired that the applicant has a record of publications in the peer-reviewed literature and experience communicating his/her research at scientific meetings. A Ph.D. in the field of atmospheric science, environmental science, or the equivalent is required as is experience with analysis of global climate model output.

In the Chemical Sciences Laboratory (CSL) of the NOAA Earth System Research Laboratories, researchers build instruments to make detailed measurements, conduct laboratory experiments, design and execute field missions, analyze observations, and use sophisticated computer models to better understand how our changing atmosphere is influencing climate – and therefore people.
 
 

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Analyze tracer transport in climate model simulations to understand how large-scale atmospheric processes and teleconnections influence stratosphere-to-troposphere transport of chemical constituents.
  • Analyze dynamics and stratospheric chemistry in climate intervention simulations.
  • Develop and/or test diagnostics for assessing stratosphere-troposphere coupling in sub-seasonal to seasonal forecast models.
  • Summarize results in scientific manuscripts and conference presentations.

What You Should Know

This position will be rostered in CIRES at CU Boulder but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305. If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.
