Job description

About the Position

CISESS/UMD seeks an experienced Atmospheric Scientist to join our Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) retrieval team. The successful candidate will focus on the development and testing of methane retrievals using shortwave infrared (SWIR) observations from NOAA and its partner satellite sensors.   This work will be done in close coordination with scientists at Harvard University who developed methane retrieval algorithm for imagers on NOAA satellites.  This role is pivotal in advancing our understanding of methane releases from various facilities related to oil and gas exploration and extraction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adapt NOAA GOES-R series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) algorithm developed by Harvard University to Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument on NOAA polar-orbiting satellites
  • Conduct case studies of known methane leaks/releases from super emitters around the globe
  • Conduct data analysis to understand the limitations (or maximum potential) of the methane algorithm
  • Collaborate with Harvard University to enhance the methane retrieval algorithm
  • Conduct case studies of comparisons between VIIRS and ABI methane fluxes for retrieval artifacts associated with differences in spatial and temporal resolutions between VIIRS and ABI
  • Publish research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Present research at national and international conferences.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Remote Sensing, or a closely related field.
  • Proven expertise in radiative transfer, retrieval algorithm development, and atmospheric data analysis.
  • Experience handling and interpreting large volumes of satellite data.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software and programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C/C++, IDL, MATLAB, Python, or similar) is required.
  • Strong publication record in the field of atmospheric science or remote sensing.
  • Excellent communication skills for scientific writing and presenting research findings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of research experience working with satellite data in a relevant area.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a research project.
  • Knowledge of current trends and advancements in atmospheric science and remote sensing.

To Apply: Interested candidates should send a CV with a list of at least 3 professional references and a cover letter explaining how your qualifications meet the posted requirements to anegri@umd.edu.
